The Savage Frontier

on Tue Jul 10, 2018 9:58 am
The overcast sky continues to lazily scatter light rain over the forest north of Greenest. In the clearing where you just finished slaying the chimera, the air is heavy with the fetid, pungent smell of blood and viscera. The sheep, thrown into a panic by the recent events, bleat wildly and strain against their leads in an attempt to vacate the area. You now notice the musical notes of birdsong coming to life in the forest, a sound that you just now realize had been strangely absent from the region. Near the remains of the chimera lay the ruined bodies of three men, one of them nearly unrecognizable as a human, his flesh torn to shreds by swarms of ravens. The other two men that were part of that ill-fated party fled into the woods as soon as the chimera arrived. You do not see any trace of them remaining in the immediate area.

After calming the sheep and loading them onto your cart, you make your way through the now-familiar forest, accompanied by the songs of birds that almost seem to be heralding your return to Greenest. Shortly after noon, as you reach the edge of the forest and enter the farmlands surrounding the small village, the rain dissipates and rays of sunlight begin to break through the clouds. From your viewpoint, you can see Greenest as well as the farmland surrounding it for a mile or so in most directions. Although the land surrounding the town is currently colored brown because of winter, you can imagine the vibrant green from various crops that would permeate the area in spring and summer, giving the town its name.

As soon as you arrive, you are greeted by Overseer Farbough, her face betraying fear. She tells you she is aware that the monster attacked you, because two of the men from the group that she sent her assistant to warn you about had rushed into town, babbling about a terrible beast. After quickly gathering their supplies, they had left town immediately. Farbough says that since you are here alive, she hopes that means that the chimera is dead. After Dorn confirms this, she breathes a loud sigh of relief, and expresses her immense gratitude. She says to wait a moment while she retrieves the reward she promised.

After just a few minutes, the overseer returns with a leather pouch in one hand, and an object wrapped in a cloth in the other. She hands the pouch to Dorn, saying it is the 150 gp she promised as payment. Then she takes the object in her other hand and unwraps it, revealing a fiery red gemstone the size of a large walnut. The stone slightly glows, and the inside of the stone appears to dance with fire. After handing this stone to Dorn and explaining its use, she once again thanks the party for their efforts, and with a large smile on her face says that she must hold a town hall meeting to inform the villagers that the threat is over.

You are left standing inside Greenest, with your cart which still contains the ballista and four sheep. One chapter of your adventure has ended, and the next chapter is about to begin, with new challenges and new experiences. Where will you let it take you?

"DARRICK! Get the cart moving! Head back to the ship and unload everything. Remount the ballista and all that ya slacker!"

Hugo heads to the ship and begins fishing for the rest of the day.

“Derrick! Jaral. Jaral, Derrick. No room for the sheep, eh? Well, I guess we have to take them back then. Gah. Give me a minute and we’ll take care of that.”
