Yartar - Dorn & Riardon

on Fri Jul 27, 2018 8:39 am
Day- 28th of Tarsakh

Dorn and Riardon each receive an exemption badge from Waterbaron Ruthiol, which will allow them to cross the western bridge and gain access to the citadel without being searched. The court wizard of Yartar takes up residence within this citadel.

As you exit the Waterbaron's estate and step back into the streets of Yartar, you are approached by two hooded figures wearing brown tunics and cloaks.

I sense that they may not have the best of intentions and I glance at Dorn who recognizes the same and we move our hands to our blades in preparation. I ask the hooded figures to state their business.

The figures stop in front of you and remove their hoods, revealing themselves as young elven males. Both elves look identical, down to the smallest detail. One of them speaks.

"I am Caeldrim, this is my brother Carric. Three days past, we both dreamt the same dream. We dreamed of you, and of this town. Dreams are sent by gods, and therefore we have journeyed to meet you. Who are you, and why are we here?"

Sensing these two elves mean us no harm we relax our stance and I say, "Well Caeldrim and Carric, I am Riadron Amakir and this is Dorn Moonbrook. We are on a quest to rid this town of a beast in the river. This village makes its living on fishing and it has all but dried up. Dorn and I have traveled here from the Star Mounts where we defeated a fierce Chimera. Describe this dream you both have had please."

Upon studying these elves more closely and realizing they are wood elves it is all I can do to hide the anger slowly welling up inside...

Caeldrim replies. "Greetings, Riardon."

The wood elf turns to face Dorn. "Greetings, Arakhor."

Carric now speaks. "We dreamt of a swirling darkness, and outside of the darkness there stood a man. Our god spoke and named him Arakhor." (here he pauses and nods at Dorn) "The man was accompanied by the symbols of our god- on his left a black wolf, with paws like the grave, and on his right a white wolf, bright like a star. Our dream ended here. We do not know why our god has sent us, only that we must aid Arakhor against the darkness that threatens him."

Startled by the description of my wolf companions and the name Arakhkor, I struggle to find the words to say and for a moment the bitterness towards the elves recedes. "My thanks to your God for sending us aid, perhaps we should seek somewhere more private so that Riardon can tell you what he has seen."

I say to the brothers, "Diola lle ten' Tulien a' lye aid. Let lye quena later about y' disturbance e' i' rhunenya enclave"

Then (in common) I suggest that we head to the cave right outside of town so that we can discuss in depth without unwanted attention or eavesdroppers.

The elf brothers follow you to the cave, and as you travel together you can see that each brother has a longbow slung over his back.

Once at the cave I tell them about the creature I saw at the rapids in the river. I describe the 100'x100' circle of slime that seems to be suspended in the water. I note that there are thousands upon thousands of minnows and not a single other fish to be seen. Then finally I talk about the creature or perhaps creatures. Coiled, writhing, mass of what appears to be snake bodies. Glowing with the power of something like an eel, but at least 5' in diameter. Either by communication (inaudible) or it is all a singular creature it moved the 10+ masses in unison.

Judging by the expressions for the elves, as I recount the morning's findings, I get the sense they may know something about what I am describing.

Caeldrim replies, "We know of this creature. It came from the darkness deep beneath the Lost Peaks several decades ago, and has slowly followed the river west, leaving behind famine and destruction. The wood elves call it Mhaor (Dorn, you know this word to mean "corruption"). Several times the elves of the High Forest sought to slay this monster, yet every time it only seemed to grow stronger. I do not know how to kill this creature, but I do know one thing- it seems fearful to leave the water."

"Tell me Caeldrim, Who is this God you serve and could he be of service to us in defeating this creature? I do not know it by the name you speak. Is there a word in the Common Tongue or Drow that I may know it by?

From this answer I know it is the Neutral-Good Demigod of Rangers and Tracking. I say, "But of course, you are Wood Elves, I should have guessed. Tell me, how do you think we should go about confronting a creature like this? I am a moderately powerful Druid and can summon a number of water creatures to aid us in a fight should we choose that path. What say you?"

Caeldrim replies, "We do not know how to go about fighting this beast. We were sent to aid you in whatever path you choose, but we have no prior experience fighting this, and nobody has defeated it thus far so we know of no weaknesses."

"You both know the area. Do either of you know anyone in Yatar or the surrounding towns that may be able share some wisdom about what it might be or where it might have come from? If we can glean any insights it will give us something to work off from."

"We rarely leave the High Forest, so we aren't very familiar with who would be the leading authorities of bestial knowledge in the area. However, the leaders of our clan have often consulted with archdruids to gain wisdom and insight into various matters."

Dorn and I are able to confer with one another and decide it may be best to seek the council of the Archdruid in Neverwinter Wood at the Eastern Enclave where I have already been summoned. I ask the twins if they will accompany us to our destination so that we can better figure out what this creature is and how to defeat it.

The twins tell you that, unfortunately, the wood elves of the High Forest do not have a great relationship with the moon elves of Neverwinter Wood. For that reason, it would be in the party's best interest if the twins were to remain behind at Yartar while the two of you travel to meet the archdruid.
